What Exactly Is In Lipstick?
Lipsticks have wax, oils, antioxidants and emollients. Wax offers the firmness and a structure to the hard lipstick. Lipsticks are possibly prepared from numerous waxes such as beeswax, ozokerite and candelilla wax.
Because of the high melting point of a wax called Carnauba wax, it has become a main element in terms of strengthening the lipstick. a variety of oils and fats are utilized in lipsticks, such as olive oil, mineral oil, cocoa butter, lanolin, and petrolatum.
Also, many lipsticks that contain a sheen or gloss within them have pig fats and castor oil in them. The various dyes or colors used in the lipsticks to obtain the appropriate tints might also contain chemicals in them. Hence making our own lipsticks at home using natural dyes obtained from plants or vegetables is far better than any other market based products.
Because of these chemicals present in lipsticks, many are worried about their health because of long term usage of lipsticks.
Why Exactly Homemade Lipstick?
The lipstick that is known to give a shinning look to your lips may possibly contain huge amounts of lead, which is a soft toxic metal that has been proved fatal to human health over years. This toxic metal directly affects our bone marrows and has a property of imitation of other minerals or metals present in the body such as zinc, copper, iron etc.
That means to say that lead can imitate any metal in our body and can bind itself to proteins and molecules in our body producing reactions that have harmful effect on us. Though no company lists lead as an ingredient, the presence has been proved long since.
In the daily use of lipstick, small amounts of lead may not be of any concern, but the prolonged use of the same can prove fatal to any women especially to those who are either pregnant or lactating. The body stores the ingested lead in bone marrows luckily. But once if damage is done and you break a bone, the lead that is released into the body cavity can do unanticipated damage.
Make Your Own Lipstick At Home
We can make our own lipstick at home based on safe substances that do not cause any harm to our health and can ensure that natural and organic substances are used in this process. For the base, while substances like beeswax, glycerin can be used, beetroots, strawberries, carrots etc are used to obtain the desired shade.
For a good shade, beetroot is the perfect vegetable to prepare lipstick from. The natural staining feature of beetroot can coat your lips with an attractive and elegant pink hue as at the same time clearing up the dark lips.
Here, we show you how to make your own lipstick using beetroots. All you need is beetroots, coconut oil, a blender, strainer and a small bowl or container.
First of all, wash the beets thoroughly and peel the skin. Cut into small pieces and blend it in the mixer. Do not any additional water as water can dilute the color vibrancy. Mix well the beetroot such that the pulp can give out maximum juice out of it.
Now strain the pulp using a strainer so that there’s no juice in the pulp in it. Strain the juice into a well sanitized or well cleaned container so that there’s no possibility for future infections. To sanitize the container thoroughly, spray some rubbing alcohol or detergent solution. Rinse off and wipe it clean.
Now to the strained juice of beetroot, add about a teaspoon or more coconut oil. If the smell of the coconut oil bothers you, you can use scented coconut oil in its place. Blend the ingredients well with a clean spoon and close the container.
Now place the container in refrigerator to harden up the mixture for future use as homemade lipstick. You can substitute beetroots with strawberries or any other vegetable or fruit according to your desired hue or shade. Also the coconut oil can be substituted with lanolin and almond oil, or beeswax, glycerin and vitamin E oil together.
Note that when working with beeswax ensure that the ingredients are all blended together nicely without any lumps or else, there might be a chance for you to get just beeswax instead of the lipstick. Also, while making the lipstick using beeswax, make sure that the concentrated juice of beetroots is used by boiling the juice. Also care must be taken while adding the beeswax. Let the ingredients be mixed together at room temperature.
If all the precautions are taken care of, you can have your own harmless and safe lipstick for use at your hand.
