Skin cancer is a life-threatening disease, seizing millions of people at present days.  On one hand, it is a painful disease and but on other its treatment is not affordable by many. Actually, this malignant neoplastic disease moves up from the skin.  When abnormal cells invade the human body and develop or spread abnormal cells inside the body then skin cancer begins its journey.

It is basically classified into three types:

1. Basal-cell cancer (BCC):

Basal-cell cancer is less severe in comparison to others. This type of cancer spreads very slowly and cannot pass around to distant areas, where in general it doesn’t cause death. The symptom of basal-cell cancer, smooth bumps on the head, neck and shoulders. Small blood vessels can be viewed within the tumor.

2. Squamous-cell cancer (SCC):

Squamous-cell cancer is more likely to spread than basal cell cancer. In squamous-cell cancer, hard lumps of skin with scalp tops occur and may cause ulcers. When SCC is not taken care, it may develop into a large mass.

3. Melanoma:

Melanoma cancer is more dangerous and deadly than other two. This cancer is very aggressive and its arrival is marked by itching or bleeding moles that change its size, shape and color.

The causes of skin cancer are:

Cancer is primarily caused due to global warming.  The exposure of ultraviolet rays increases the risk of cancers. Other causes of cancer include smoking, HPV infections, inherited syndromes, chronic non-healing wounds, aging and many others.

Hence, it is better to catch skin cancer, before it catches you.

The diagnosis and treatment of cancer:

For diagnosing cancer, a doctor examines the skin and a sample of suspicious skin is removed for lab testing. A biopsy determines the cancer effect. The best cancer treatment is chosen after considering the age and general health of the patient, the type, and size of cancer and affected body region.

A treatment strategy for Skin Cancer includes:

1. Surgery:

Surgery is the main treatment of cancer. Most of the basal -cell and squamous- cell cancers can be treated by surgical operation. Primarily, it is a minor operation with a local anesthesia. If the cancerous portion is a small area, then it can be easily removed by a dermatologist. But, if cancer had spread over the large area, then a plastic surgeon has to enter into the scene.

2. Radiotherapy:

Radiotherapy opts when cancer covers a large area and it is used in areas difficult to reach. But it is not suitable for elders and those who experience health problems. Sometimes surgery and radiotherapy are used together to treat cancer in order to boil down the risk of cancer cells left behind after surgery.

3. Chemotherapy:

Chemotherapy is still an experimental treatment. In this, cancer on the top layer of skin is treated with the help of drugs, modern formulations, chemical agents, alkaloids etc.

4. Immunotherapy:

Immunotherapy stimulates the body immunity system to fight against cancer, where it uses body's natural defense to cure cancer. It is believed to have nearly fewer side effects.

5. Photodynamic therapy:

Photodynamic therapy is relatively a new type of treatment and an alternative to surgery. The infected area of skin is allowed to expose in a special type of light which destroys cancer cells.
