Dysuria is a condition when men and women face the pain, burning sensation and discomfort during their urination. It is usually seen in women of any age but in men it is more noticed in old age than younger age. Are you one among facing this kind of problems? Then it might be because of dysuria or painful urination.

Women generally face this situation when going through their menopause erios is in reproductive stage. Most of the women will have intense pain. This condition during urination leaves them in bad condition and will disturb them mentally and physically all the day. Genital parts always get wet making irritation. Sometimes the situation may worsen and infection may spread leading to more pain.

In men this situation may arise due to the unhealthy habits and improper care. One more reason for this would be Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) which is a common genital issue. UTI occurs when harmful bacteria enters in to the urinary tract from urethra. So, proper care must be taken on the genital parts and must be kept clean.

Common Causes of Painful Urination

The most common cause of dysuria is bladder infection, urinary tract infection and kidney infection.

Other infections include:-

Prostate Inflammation which is also called as Prostatitis

Bladder Infection also called as Cystitis or bladed stones

Kidney stones or kidney Infection

Vaginal Infection (Vaginitis)

Perfumes, deodorants, soaps etc.



STD (Sexually Transmitted Diseases)

Yeast Infection

Gential Herper etc.

UTI and Its Causes:-

Urinary Tract Infection can infect any part of the urinary tract such as kidneys, bladder, ureters and urethra. UTI is mainly caused because of following factors and they are:

Harmonal changes in women that happens during the pregnancy and menopause

Urinary catheter

Enlarged prostate

Kidney stones


Old age in men

Common Symptoms of UTI:-


Intense Burning sensation

High body temperature

Blisters or else sore in genital herpes

Abnormal white discharge from penis or virginal area

Smelling urine

Flank pain or back pain

Urge to go for urine

Blood in urine etc.

There are several infections that lead to this problem and they are listed below.

Common Infections for Dysuria

1. UTI

UTI which is Urinary Tract Infection can occur at any part of your tract and it is the main reason for dysuria or painful urination. The other parts are as listed above. As said bacteria is the cause of this infection. In this situation the bacteria enters in to the urinary tract from the urethra. The urethra is a tube that carries the urine and sends it out of the body through bladder. The common symptoms of this UTI are given above.

2. Transmitted Infections

The transmitted infections here mean sexually transmitted ones such as Chlamydia, gonorrhea and genital herpes. These infections can also be the reasons for painful urination or dysuria. The symptoms of these infection include, itching, blisters, sores, burning and white discharge besides painful urination.

3. Vaginal Infection

This infection in women can lead to dysuria or painful urination which is because of the fungal or yeast infections. Peculiar or unusual odor and white discharge would be the common symptoms of this vignal infection. 

When you observe any of above listed symptoms or infections, you better consult a doctor as soon as possible. Some people may go with home remedies but even the problem persists more than a day you should either take proper medication or consult the doctor before the condition may worsen.

Diagnosis and Treatment for Dysuria

1. Urine Test

Urine test and blood test should be done and they will reveal the actual reason for the dysuria. White blood cells in the blood arena indicate that there is a bacterial infection and the urine culture is done for knowing the actual bacteria that is causing the infection. Based on these factors doctor will suggest the proper medical treatment.

2. Bladder and Prostate Test

If urine test doesn’t reveal any signs or causes for painful urination, then you need to go for bladder and prostate test and if there is any problem over there, they must be treated at first and then treatment for painful urination caused by bladder and prostate conditions will be treated.

3. Swab test

This test of the vagina secretion will be done for women for checking the particular symptoms of the infection.

In order to diagnose the sexually transmitted infection there are also certain tests that are carried out.

Home Treatments Include

Other than above tests and their related treatments, there are some common treatments that can solve the painful urination problem and they are:

Discontinue the use of irritant if you have irritation on your skin.

To get relief from painful urination use pain relievers.

To clear off the toxic that are caused by excess urination drink lot of water.

Irritation, pain and inflammation caused during UTI can be kept under control with the help of heating pads.

Eat curd regularly and the good bacteria present in it will kill the bad bacteria which is causing urinary irritation.

For painful sensation caused by UTI, take a cup of water with a spoon of baking soda and it will be effective.

Eat healthy foods such as carbohydrates that are rich in fiber, healthy fats and olive oil other than, spicy foods, caffeine and alcohol as these may irritate your bladder.

During the initial stages, you can follow these home remedies and these would be the better options for preventing the problem. But, if the situation worsens consult your doctor.
